The Most Romantic Moments from TV and Film

There’s no doubt about it, when it comes to the romance stakes we always need a ridiculously high amount of expectation to aspire to. And this is where we call upon Hollywood to offer us a wealth of mostly unachievable inspiration. Here are just a few of our favourite fairy tale moments…

1. Sex and the City – “You’re the One, Carrie”.

After six seasons of ups and downs, Sex and the City fans breathed a sigh of euphoric relief when Mr. Big travelled to Paris in the show’s final episode to declare his love for our favourite female protagonist Carrie Bradshaw.

2. Pretty Woman (1990) – Richard Gere, A White Limo and Roses.

Richard Gere: “So what happens after he climbs the tower and rescues her?” Julie Roberts: “She rescues him right back”. – This is got to be one of our favourite ending lines of all time, especially with its sassy feminist edge. Julie Roberts and Richard Gere at their very best.

3. Downton Abbey – The Proposal.

We wouldn’t feel the cold either if the charming and dashing Dan Stevens was proposing to us outside a castle in the snow. After having waited for 2 seasons with bated breath for these two soul mates to get it together, this moment really did feel like a Christmas miracle.

4. Grey’s Anatomy – Izzy and Alex’s Wedding.

Even the ‘Big C’ couldn’t hold Izzy back from marrying her love Alex in this super emotional episode of the hit show.

5. Notting Hill (1999) – The Press Conference.

A movie star falling in love with a normal run-of-the-mill guy; this really is the stuff that Hollywood dreams are made of. When you add Elvis Costello’s masterpiece ‘She’ into the mix for the final scene, it’s safe to say that this movie earned itself a firm rating as one of the most romantic moment’s of all time.

6. Titanic (1997) – Leo and Kate.

Cheesy to some or the most romantic movie of all time to others; make of Titanic what you will but nothing can take away the fact that the love story is truly epic and Leo and Kate’s onscreen chemistry is, as ever, incomparable.

7. The Fault in our Stars (2014) – “Thank you for our little infinity”.

Although shrouded in sadness, I defy anyone not to see the romance in this beautiful speech made by Shailene Woodley to Ansel Elghort in The Fault in Our Stars. If you haven’t seen it yet, good luck trying not to ball like a baby.

8. Beauty and the Beast (1991) – The Ballroom Scene.

It’s fair to say that Disney has shaped a great deal of our notions of romance but none more so than Beauty and the Beast and that iconic ballroom scene.

9. Love Actually (2003) – Christmas Carol Scene.

It’s easy to forget that not all romantic moments have a happy ending, a prime example being the sweet declaration of unrequited love from Andrew Lincoln to Keira Knightley in Love Actually.

10. The Sound of Music (1965) – Julie Andrews and Christopher Plumber’s Dance.

How do you solve a problem like Maria? Well, firstly become the most loved governess the world has ever seen – to a hoard of bratty children – and then melt the ice-cold heart of Captain Von Trapp, in a dance scene that depicts a beautiful fusion of innocence and passion.

11. Gossip Girl – “You’re Chuck Bass”.

Although more romantic in setting than subject matter, the moment that Blair and Chuck meet at the iconic Gare Du Nord station in Paris is truly iconic. And the red Oscar De La Renta dress, I mean, there are no words. It is just such a terrible shame that she’s meeting him to tell him she doesn’t love him anymore.

12. Friends – “I got off the plane”.

It was the moment we’d all been waiting for; Ross and Rachel finally making our dreams come true and getting back together for good. They definitely made us wait for it throughout the ten seasons of Friends but it was worth every second.

13. Ghost (1990) – Clay Pots Scene.

What could be more romantic than the love of your life visiting you from beyond the grave to create one of the most talked about love scenes of all time?

14. As Good as It Gets (1997) – “You make me wanna be a better man”.

Romantic more in sentiment than physical actions, Jack Nicholson’s honest admission to Helen Hunt left us all speechless in its pureness and simplicity.

15. The Holiday (2006) – Pub scene.

As if just looking at Jude Law wasn’t good enough, that moment in the holiday when he walks in to his local to find Cameron Diaz is just magical.

16. P.S. I Love You (2007) – “I’ll love you ’till the end”.

Another major tearjerker, I would be lying if I said the entirety of PS. I Love You won’t have you in tears pretty much all the way through. But when Hilary Swank’s character sings ‘I’ll love you ‘till the end’ to her husband it is truly gut-wrenching, whilst still incredibly romantic.

17. Meet Joe Black (1998) – “I love you now, I’ll love you always”.

If only every random cup of morning coffee led us to Brad Pitt (circa dream hair 1998) falling in love with us. What we wouldn’t give for him to love us “now and always”.

18. Sense and Sensibility (1995) – “My heart is, and always will be, yours”.

Another personal favourite of mine, this scene shows Emma Thompson at her absolute best when Hugh Grant finally comes to admit his true feelings for her. I can safely say that acting this good shapes your view on romance forever.

19. The OC – Ryan and Marissa First Meeting.

The angst and passion of teen romance really doesn’t get better than The OC and is perfectly opened with the iconic scene of Ryan and Marissa’s meeting.

20. 90210 – Ivy and Raj’s Wedding.

Sadly some of the most touching romantic moments are tinged with tragedy and sadness and this is definitely the case for 90210’s Ivy and Raj who get married under the most heartbreaking circumstances.
