The Most Stylish TV Shows from the Past Twenty Years

Although it might not be something that everyone thinks of, you would be surprised to hear how much popular culture is influenced by television, especially when it comes to what we wear. With a surge in 90s fashion currently hitting the mainstream, we thought it worth looking back over the most prominent TV shows that have influenced our style over the past twenty years…

1. Friends (1994-2004).

This one is particularly relevant for all of you ladies out there. Where do you think all of those chokers, smock dresses and washed out jeans came from? Monica, Phoebe and Rachel, that’s where!

2. Sex and the City (1998-2004).

This one is a bit of a no-brainer considering Sex and the City has been heralded for its outstanding contribution to fashion. The clothes worn by Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha over the years even have their own Instagram account, @everyoutfitonsatc, which is definitely worth a follow for anyone who is a fan of the show.

3. The O.C. (2003-2007).

We always knew that ‘California Girls’ were something to be jealous of but never was it made more evident than by Marissa Cooper and BFF Summer Roberts in The O.C with their stunning mixture of ‘preppy’, ‘boho’ and ‘upper class’ fashion. Who would have thought that was possible, huh? Even the parents’ style was at the top of its game.

4. The Hills (2006-2010).

After obsessing over The O.C. for years, we were then handed the real-life version in the form of ultimate fashionista Lauren Conrad and her group of socialite friends in The Hills. Never were the fashion stakes so high.

5. The City (2008-2010).

The producers of The Hills certainly didn’t miss a trick and on the back of the success of the MTV show, they decided to make a spin-off on the other side of the country called The City. This show was even more envy-inducing when it came to the characters’ fashion and followed ex-Hills cast member Whitney Port and her plight to make in the fashion business in New York.

6. Gossip Girl (2007-2012).

If ever there was a television show to make you fall apart with envy, it is Gossip Girl (coincidentally made by the creators of The O.C.). Following the lives of ‘Manhattan’s Elite’, this show had pretty much every noteworthy fashion designer in the world clamouring to dress the cast and my goodness did they pull it off well.

7. Mad Men (2007-2015).

If you ever needed any kind of inspiration for 1960s fashion then there is no other place to look than Mad Men. Following the lives of Madison Avenue advertising executives, this show was full of jaw-dropping tailored suits and couture dresses to die for.

8. 90210 (2008-2013).

After The O.C. finished in 2007, there was definitely a gap in the market for some California teen drama, along with an update on their chilled-out sunkissed fashion. Low and behold, Hollywood decided to revamp the classic Beverly Hills 90210 to bring a more up-to-date stylish version to our screens.

9. Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017).

Although set in a quiet little town outside Philadelphia, these characters certainly live a life less ordinary in the aftermath of the murder of their friend Alison. Furthermore, after years of being shown the epitome of ‘girl-nextdoor’ fashion by Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer, we are now being introduced to their more ‘vampy’ grown-up sides in the latest season.

10. Girls (2012-2017).

Even though this show isn’t necessarily set out to give us immediate style inspiration, it actually does just that. The thing to love most about it is that Hannah, the main character, is so comfortable in herself that she seems to wear whatever the hell she wants, regardless of what others think. If that’s not a good lesson to learn about style and self-confidence, I don’t know what is.
