Met Gala 2017: Worst Dressed

So, with the good and the bad, sadly must come the ugly. However, I feel it is very much worth pointing out that even though some of these stars might look like the worst dressed on the Met Gala 2017 not-so-red carpet, they still deserve a lot of kudos for adhering to the avant-garde theme of “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons”. We think it’s best if you take a look and judge for yourself…

1. Katy Perry

If ever there was going to be a dress loaded with controversy and intrigue then this is it. And whilst many people were left feeling completely perplexed by Katy Perry’s Maison Margiela Artisanal red gown, it can be argued she definitely fulfilled people’s avant-garde expectations of her as co-chair of the event.

2. Cara Delevingne

It’s surprising how upset people get when women cut their hair off and perhaps even more so if they spray-paint their heads silver… However, Cara Delevingne could not have given less of a hoot as she turned the mirror on the public with her dramatic Chanel look and made the statement that we should rely less on our physical attributes to define beauty. You have to applaud her for that.

3. Gigi Hadid

With Vogue describing her look as “artfully dishevelled”, it is perhaps unsurprising that the rest of the world was rather upset to see the normally radiant Gigi Hadid subverting their expectations with her asymmetric Tommy Hilfiger gown.

4. Rihanna

Perhaps the most anticipated dividing outfit of the night was Rihanna’s outrageous Comme des Garçons dress, which looked for more like a work of art than something to be worn to a ball. However, with these sentiments echoing those of the inspiration of the night, Rei Kawakubo, we have no doubt this reaction was the response that she wanted.

5. Chrissy Teigen

Despite various trolls insulting her look on Twitter, likening it to a bad arts and crafts project, Chrissy Teigen was no way going to let the haters get her down and even lashed back at one of them saying “Your beard has right angles, waldo”. You’ve just got to commend her feistiness.

6. Claire Danes

Another outfit that had people in an uproar is past co-chair Claire Danes who chose the newest designer of the moment Monse to make a deliberately thought-provoking outfit for her. And that he did, of course meaning that there were many up in arms about its capricious details. Nonetheless, once again it was one of the most heralded looks of the night, in terms of its obvious homage to the theme.

7. Mandy Moore

It can be argued that Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garçons are synonymous with dramatic fashion and if this is the case Mandy Moore has gotten it spot on with her Michael Kors look. But sadly it turned out to be too much for the rest of the world to handle.

8. Halle Berry

Definitely not lacking in the artistic department, Halle berry made her Met Gala debut in a custom Donatella Versace gown that left many feeling that it just didn’t quite work. Not least because her underwear was on full display. Better luck next year, Halle.

9. Janelle Monáe

Although she has remained under the radar in recent years, now is Janelle Monáe’s time to shine and she is clearly ready to use this spotlight to express herself artistically through her music, acting and now fashion. Furthermore, as you can see from her risqué Ralph & Russo ball gown she clearly isn’t afraid to take risks which might have caused a bit of disappointment for some who expected something more traditional but not for the fans who know her well.

10. Madonna

Whilst it can be argued that there is no better fashion match than controversial pop star Madonna and fashion designer Jeremy Scott, creative director of Moschino, many felt that this look simply didn’t embody what they’d expected from such a provocative style icon.
