The 10 Best Bond Girls

Goodness knows we all love a good James Bond movie: the glamour, the action, the excitement… It always makes for a perfect few hours of escapism. However, whilst we normally find ourselves quibbling over our favourite Bond actor, we don’t normally give the Bond girls the credit they deserve. So here is your very own list of the most ‘kick-ass’ actresses who have starred alongside 007 over the years:

1. Ursula Andress, Dr. No, 1963

Who could forget the striking vision of Ursula Andress emerging from the sea as Honey Ryder in the first ever James Bond movie, Dr No? Over the years she has become an iconic image of a powerful woman (in spite of being ogled by a very young and undeniably handsome Sean Connery).

2. Honor Blackman, Goldfinger, 1964

Establishing any kind of feminist authority was never going to be easy when you’re playing a character called Pussy Galore. However, Honor Blackman showed everyone how it’s done with a highly convincing portrayal of a female pilot, proficient in judo and seemingly immune to the charm of Sean Connery.

3. Diana Rigg, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 1969

As the only female character to get as far as marrying James Bond, Diana Rigg certainly had a lot to take on in her role as Tracy Bond, a.k.a. Contessa Teresa di Vicenzo, despite her character coming to a rather tragic end. Interestingly enough, this is also the only James Bond movie ever to star George Lazenby as 007.

4. Jane Seymour, Live and Let Die, 1973

In the first of Roger Moore’s long spell playing 007 he meets his match in the transfixing beauty of psychic Solitaire, played by Jane Seymour. Although a direct reference to the occult isn’t everyone’s cup of tea Jane Seymour very much holds her own in this striking and memorable performance.

5. Britt Ekland, The Man with the Golden Gun, 1974

Despite numerous bad reviews of her “feeble” character Mary Goodnight in The Man with the Golden Gun, Britt Ekland still manages to hold firm in people’s memories as one of the most unforgettable Bond girls to date.

6. Barbara Bach, The Spy Who Loved Me, 1977

Definitely renowned as one of the more assertive Bond girls to date, Barbara Bach plays powerful Russian agent Anya Amasova who has to work alongside 007 in order to defeat evil shipping magnate Karl Stromberg.

7. Famke Janssen, GoldenEye, 1995

You’ve got to love a gold old-fashioned femme fatale, especially one who can crush a man using just her thighs! And who could forget that violent fight/love scene between Famke Janssen and Pierece Brosnan (one of the later Bonds) in GoldenEye. The film wouldn’t be the same without it if you ask me.

8. Rosamund Pike, Die Another Day, 2002

For this particular film it is tempting to point to Halle Berry in her orange bikini (which of course we all love) as being one of the best Bond girls but it has to be said that Rosamund Pike’s portrayal of agent-turned-evil Miranda Frost actually goes even further towards giving Bond a run for his money.

9. Eva Green, Casino Royale, 2006

One of the most complex Bond girls of all time, Eva Green had the mammoth task of portraying Bond’s seeming accomplice Vesper Lynd who goes on to betray him, but for reasons that the audience are somehow able to empathise with. Creating this empathy could not have been easy but Eva carried it off spectacularly.

10. Léa Seydoux, Spectre, 2015

Whilst again it would be tempting to lean towards the voluptuous beauty of Monica Bellucci who also stars in Spectre, you would do well not to ignore the astute determination of Léa Seydoux who goes on to prove that there is more to her than meets the eye.
