With ‘Netflix and Chill’ being very much the thing to do these days, at least we can thank our lucky stars that television has never been better. Whatever genre you’re interested in, be it comedy, action, thrill, adventure, there is definitely something for everyone in 2017. Here are just a few of the most promising shows you might want to look out for:
1. Marvel’s Iron Fist
Marvel fans will be very happy about the new show hitting Netflix this year, starring Finn Jones as Danny Rand, otherwise known as ‘Iron Fist’. For those that aren’t familiar, Danny Rand is a martial arts expert who is able to summon the power of a supernatural ‘Iron Fist’ to help him fight the criminal goings on in New York City.

2. Taboo
You can always rely on Tom Hardy to bring a dark, brooding essence to any television show or film that he stars in and Taboo is no different, especially since he also wrote and produced it. Set in the 1800s, viewers should be prepared for some pretty raw and gruesome plotlines, along with a widely speculated scene showing Hardy wearing nothing but a loincloth. Oh my.

3. Z: The Beginning of Everything
Told from a refreshing new perspective, Amazon Prime’s latest hit, Z: The Beginning of Everything (starring Christina Ricci) will focus on the viewpoint of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s misunderstood wife Zelda.

4. This Is Us
Notching up some notable awards, This is Us is already a hit in the US and is now set to open up to the rest of the world. The plot follows 6 characters who are linked in ways they don’t even know about. Mandy Moore is also back to remind us of her acting credentials.

5. The Handmaid’s Tale
Sadly there doesn’t seem a more fitting time for Margaret Atwood’s dystopian novel to be made in to a TV series. Starring Alexis Bledel (of Gilmore Girls fame) and Elisabeth Moss (best known for Mad Men) this dark story follows a reality where women have no rights and live under a ‘theocratic military dictatorship’.

6. The Young Pope
Having already hit the small screen late last year, series 1 of The Young Pope is gaining more and more momentum, headed up by a stellar cast including Jude Law and Diane Keaton. Telling the story of an outlandish American pope ‘Lenny Belardo’, this show is not one to be missed.

7. Santa Clarita Diet
I don’t think there is any other way to describe this show other than weird, weird, weird. Basically, Drew Barrymore’s character Sheila lives a seemingly happy life with her husband Joel until it actually turns out that she’s killed, becoming some sort of happy zombie that needs to feast on human flesh. Hats off to the producers because it looks like they’ve managed to put a hilarious spin on such a dark tale but whether the world is ready for it or not remains to be seen.

8. Sneaky Pete
This has got to be one of the shows I’m most excited about. Starring legendary Breaking Bad actor Bryan Cranston and acclaimed Hollywood actor Giovanni Ribisi, this show follows a con man on the run from a malicious gangster and having to resort to unusual means for survival.

9. Legion
Dan Stevens has come a long way from his Downton Abbey days and is set to shock us all again by starring as David Haller, otherwise known as Marvel’s ‘Legion’. The story follows the plights of David and his superpowers, which lead him to having tormenting split personalities and a near breakdown, before he falls in love and decides to try and turn it all around.

10. Big Little Lies
Any television show being directed by Jean Marc Vallée, responsible for Wild and Dallas Buyers Club, was always going to be worth a watch. Let alone because of the fact that it stars Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Shailene Woodley. There haven’t been too many details released as it is still being filmed but we’ve been told to expect a great deal of scandal and nail-biting intrigue.
